Obama’s Speech Did Not Calm Down Liberal House Leaders — Sen. Harkin says Public Option will Pass the Senate

The Huffington Post, citing a post in The Plum Line is reporting:

“Speech or no speech, it looks like House liberals have no intention whatsoever of easing their pressure on Obama to keep a meaningful public option in the health care bill.

“House progressive leaders just sent another letter to the President — which was sent over by a source — reiterating their demand for inclusion of the public option and insisting on a face to face meeting to discuss it.”

As The Plum Line puts it:

“TPM reported yesterday, Obama had originally promised a meeting to progressives, but mysteriously, it never materialized — hence the reiterated demand for a face-to-face.

“While Obama did offer far more expansive support for the public option than expected, he hinted at the possible use of coops or a trigger, which are both unacceptable to liberals. Combine this letter with the fact that Tom Harkin, the chair of the Senate HELP committee, said today that a public option won’t be a dealbreaker, and you’ve really got a serious intra-Dem split in the works.”

Senator Harkin said on MSNBC:

“Some of my colleagues may not like a public option, but they like all the other things and I don’t think they’ll vote against the bill just because it has the public option in it.”

The fact that Sen. Harkin is the new HELP Committee Chairman adds more credibility to his prediction that his fellow Senators “won’t vote against the bill just because it has the public option in it” statement, although the fact that what he said will likely encourage the left to keep fighting on the public option and that The Plum Line is stating “you’ve really got a serious intra-Dem split in the works” means the politics of the public option still have not played out and have a great potential to disrupt the fate of ObamaCare.
