Newsweek: Clift: Public Option in Senate Bill will Cause Implosion

Elanor Clift, a self-described liberal and talk show participant wrote in her weekly Newsweek column that:

“Lieberman is opposed to a public option, saying it’s a nonstarter for him. My pro-reform health-care lobbyist tells me that if Democrats make the public option essential to passage of reform, the whole thing will implode.”

Clift dismisses Senators Rockefeller and Schumer’s push for a public option as coming from the “usual suspects” and that Senator Snowe’s idea for a public option trigger is as far left as the Senate will get in order to keep the 60 votes needed to stop a Republican filibuster.

This, however, is not the only issue that the 60 Democratic votes needed to stop the filibuster will hinge on.  The vote to end the filibuster is the single most important vote to be taken in the U.S. Senate this year.  And the Democrats need to hold everyone to end the filibuster, and holding everyone, as Clift writes, is a tall order.
