Don’t Believe that the Des Moines Register Spiked their Last Poll before the Caucuses Over a Single Time One Candidate Was Not Named in One Question to One Voter
The stated reason that the Des Moines Register and CNN spiked their last poll prior to tomorrow’s Iowa Caucus is, well, highly suspect.
According to the Des Moines Register, one person asking Iowans who they support in tomorrow’s caucuses neglected to mention the name of one candidate, one time.
This, they say, undermines the entire poll. Therefore, its results cannot be released.
This is why polls have a 3% or 4% margin of error. It takes into account anomalies like one surveyor asking one question incorrectly.
Here, according the Des Moines Register, is the reason they spiked the poll:
Nothing is more important to the Register and its polling partners than the integrity of the Iowa Poll. Today, a respondent raised an issue with the way the survey was administered, which could have compromised the results of the poll. It appears a candidate’s name was omitted in at least one interview in which the respondent was asked to name their preferred candidate.
While this appears to be isolated to one surveyor, we cannot confirm that with certainty. Therefore, the partners made the difficult decision to not to move forward with releasing the Iowa Poll.
My guess is that the results of the poll were more unnerving than a complaint by a polled that their candidate was left out of the list of options.
It strains credibility that given the massive media attention and saturation coverage, mail, email, digital ads and television ads on network and cable TV, that not mentioning one candidate’s name at a time when every Iowan knows the main, remaining candidates’ names, is the cause of the last poll before the caucuses to be shut down.
The Dem Moines Register and CNN are either cowards — picture hand-wringing liberals riddled with angst and fear over a tempest in a teapot controversy who beat their chests about integrity while looking like they have lost all perspective and are political hypochondriacs in the extreme– or they really don’t like the poll results and are using this as an excuse to spike the poll.
And the only result that would cause them to spike their own poll is Bernie Sanders crushing the ball.
Or, their choice of Joe Biden in a tailspin.
Here are the results of the spiked poll.
