Blue Dog Ross (D-AR): We have the Votes, It Can’t Leave the Committee
As Members of the U.S. House of Representative’s Committee on Energy and Commerce milled around the Committee door yesterday afternoon, Members were smelling jet fumes (do I have to show up tomorrow, or can I just grab a plane home now?) and one Democratic member told the Staff Director that the whole thing was a “cluster.”
Add to this the following comments reported by Politico and made by Blue Dog Ross (D-AR), and you have a very serious problem for the Dems:
- Arkansas Rep. Mike Ross, a key negotiator on health care for moderate Blue Dog Democrats, has warned that “there’s no way they can pass the current bill on the House floor. Not even close.”
- The conservative Arkansas Democrat also objects to the surtaxes included in the bill, saying, “I don’t like the idea of raising taxes in the worst economic crisis since World War II.”
- “I suspect we’ll have all the time we need, given they don’t have the votes to get it out of committee,” Ross said.
