Telling My Daughter not to be a Doctor

About a year ago my daughter was faced with a choice, Med school or nursing school, and she wanted to know my thoughts. It was not an issue of grades or of cost, it was an issue of her own preference. I told her if she really had a burning desire to be a doctor she should do it but that by the time she left Med school some 13 years hence, the role of the government in health care would likely be much larger and her skills would be subject to price controls in the largest segment of the patient population, Medicare. One other former White House Presidential advisor on health care concurred. It would be her call but she would be subject to scrutiny by lawyers, government and insurance company bureaucrats, in addition, of course to hospital bureaucrats. As the need for physicians grows, it is likely that most rational people, regardless of how much they want to be a doctor, will likely find other outlets for their considerable talents. My daughter chose nursing school. |
